We are proud to announce the launch of the 2014 100 Resilient Cities Challenge, which is now open to cities worldwide. Applications to be part of the 100 Resilient Cities Network will be accepted until September 10th, 2014, at which point 100RC and a group of dedicated judges will begin evaluating these applications to select our next cohort of member cities.
The world is becoming increasingly urban. Approximately 50% of the world’s population today lives in cities; estimates project that by 2050 this will increase to 75%. At the same time, cities face more frequent and intense natural and manmade threats. Taken together, these two trends make it clear that cities need to think and act differently.
100 Resilient Cities defines resilience as “the capacity of individuals, communities, institutions, businesses and systems within a city to survive, adapt, and grow no matter what kinds of chronic stresses and acute shocks they experience.” The 100 Resilient Cities Challenge is supporting cities that are ready to adopt innovative approaches to building resilience to the physical, economic, and social challenges that are a part of 21st century life. These challenges are not just shocks such as fires, floods, and earthquakes, but also stresses such as endemic crime, chronic food and water shortages, and monolithic economies.
In the last year we’ve worked with 32 cities from around the world, understanding what makes them tick and starting to surface the steps they need to take to become more resilient. We’re looking forward to using everything we’ve learned over the past year to ensure we have the best group of city partners available, who can work with us, learn from each other, and help lead the global resilience movement. The world is becoming more urbanized and cities are facing an ever greater number of challenges, so the question is: how will cities move forward?
The Challenge invites applications from cities worldwide that are ready to address to the social, economic, and physical challenges that they increasingly face in an urbanizing world.
