A Statement from Michael Berkowitz, President of 100 Resilient Cities – Pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation

“We were incredibly saddened to hear the news of San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee’s sudden passing overnight. On behalf of the entire 100 Resilient Cities organization, I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mayor Lee, along with the many in San Francisco and the Bay Area who knew Mayor Lee as a fierce advocate and leader.

“For years, we’ve seen firsthand the impact of Mayor Lee’s efforts in San Francisco – working to build a more equitable, sustainable, and resilient city. A former housing advocate, Mayor Lee was the first mayor in the world to hire a Chief Resilience Officer in 2014.

“On a global scale, Mayor Lee was a vocal advocate for cities, especially on issues of immigration and climate change. He helped to spearhead important resilience efforts in San Francisco on seismic and flood risks, among others – creating important examples and lessons for cities around the world.

“San Francisco lost a true champion and leader – and we stand ready to continue supporting the City of San Francisco in this difficult time.”
