Semarang’s Resilience Journey
The city of Semarang released its Resilience Strategy on May 23, 2016. Explore the strategy here.
Semarang’s Resilience Story
As a coastal city in an Indonesian archipelago, the city’s most pressing concerns are about water. It experiences two types of floods: tidal flooding and flash floods. In recent years, the impact from floods has multiplied due to sea level rise, coastal erosion, and land subsidence. The city has implemented innovative programs for rain water harvesting, planted vetiver grass to prevent landslides, rehabilitated mangroves to protect coastlines, and invested in early warning systems for floods and vector-borne diseases, but there is still work to do.
