NEW YORK – Michael Berkowitz, President of 100 Resilient Cities – Pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation (100RC), announced today the selection of Lina Liakou for the role of Regional Director, Europe and the Middle East at 100RC, based in the organization’s London, UK office. Until recently, Liakou served as Chief Resilience Officer and Deputy Mayor of Thessaloniki, Greece – a 100RC Network Member. In that capacity, Liakou created and began implementation of one of Europe’s first Citywide Resilience Strategies – “Resilient Thessaloniki: A Strategy for 2030” – created in conjunction with 100RC. As Regional Director, Liakou will lead the organization’s strategic vision in Europe and the Middle East, take part in overseeing the implementation of on-the-ground initiatives, and will lead 100RC’s London office.
“Lina’s unique qualifications as a city leader and resilience expert make her a perfect fit to help steer our efforts in Europe and the Middle East,” said Michael Berkowitz. “Already part of the 100RC family, we have seen first-hand her skills and qualifications not just in Thessaloniki, but as a champion and advocate across Europe. We are thrilled to have Lina on board to help us fortify the work of building a more resilience Europe and Middle East.”
Lina Liakou comes to 100RC from her previous dual post as Deputy Mayor in Urban Resilience and Development Planning and Chief Resilience Officer for the City of Thessaloniki, Greece. In addition to leading the development of Thessaloniki’s Resilience Strategy, she spearheaded the implementation of the city’s 5-year operational and strategic plan, drive for developing international partnerships, and management of all European Union funding streams. In conjunction with Thessaloniki’s membership in the 100RC Network, Liakou also oversaw the creation of the City’s Office of Urban Resilience.
“As Chief Resilience Officer for Thessaloniki, Greece, I saw first-hand the power of focusing on urban resilience,” said Lina Liakou, 100RC Regional Director for Europe and the Middle East. “At a time when Thessaloniki was mired in a national fiscal crisis and grappling with the largest modern-day population migration, the process to create and begin implementation of Thessaloniki’s Resilience Strategy provided an important framework to help guide citywide decision-making for the short- and long-term, with a clear focus on changing systems to better the lives of Thessaloniki’s residents.”
